I also do this for ram and other locations that are prone to hotspots. My advice is to if you are worried about temperatures, ensure your cooling strategy will include highly variable peaks if you are just not comfortable with what people have reported.

You may be forging ahead into unknown territory. To that end, maybe get blower or a fan to mount over the VRM, if you are not directly intending to replace the VRM heatsink with something custom.

I've industrial velcro'd a 40mm fan over my VRM, which actually is water cooled.

However, the components around the VRM are not directly benetitting from this, and the airflow movement helps a great deal in reducing the temperature disparity in the area.

But I have the same issue. There's no direct answer I could find for what works best, so I had to figure out some of it myself.
